I was sitting in my living room looking out my bay window. The sun was shining through the bottom part of the window, and I couldn’t help noticing how dirty the window was where the sun was shining through. I could barely see outside the window. However, the areas of the window where the sunlight did not shine through seemed totally clear and clean. Now you’ve probably noticed this phenomenon in your own house, but for me this time was different.
It reminded me that no matter how good, how clean, how righteous, we think we are, it’s only the light of Christ that can reveal our true nature. We may think we’re clean, but we’re not. Romans 3:23 reminds us that “all have sinned and falls short of the glory of God” and Romans 3:10 says “There is no one righteous, not even one.”
The Old Testament Law (the Ten Commandments) was designed to shine a light on the human condition, revealing our sinfulness and helplessness and our total dependence on a Savior to redeem us. From the beginning of creation, our sovereign God had planned for the redemption of those who place their faith in His Son, Jesus Christ (John 3:16; Ephesians 2:8; Romans 10:9-10). Jesus says in John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jesus’ light, the truth in His written Word, reveals our sinfulness but also the road that leads to eternal life.
Only our Lord Jesus can make us truly clean, so be encouraged, for as Paul reminds us in Romans 8:38-39 “that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
