Be Encouraged – October 3rd, 2016

Have you ever just wanted to put a bag over your head you were so embarrassed? Whether it’s from tripping over myself, failing at a sports event, or stumbling over my words, I have embarrassed myself more times than I can count. By far, however, the moments that have been the most embarrassing is when others have seen, found out, or confronted me over sin. Sometimes this embarrassment leads me to angry outbursts towards myself or even others, and I heap even more embarrassment upon myself as a result. Other times, I just want to shut down and never try anything again. But Proverbs 20:9 has some great encouragement for us whenever we are overwhelmed with embarrassment over our sin. It says, “Who can say, ‘I have made my heart clean, I am pure from my sin?’” This is a rhetorical question and the implied answer is no one. No one is without sin. How is this encouraging when dealing with the embarrassment of sin you might ask? Well, it reminds us that everyone is in the same boat. Everyone is dealing some form of embarrassment from sin. There are no exceptions, and everyone constantly needs the same solution, grace. And this grace is overflowing in the person of Jesus Christ. Be encouraged today, we are all constantly embarrassing ourselves, in constant need of Jesus Christ grace, and He lavishes it upon us as we turn to Him.
