The Source of True Wisdom

BeEncouraged20

I want wisdom!!  This is a constant prayer of mine.  I want wisdom in raising my kids, being a husband, friend, and pastor.  I want wisdom concerning God’s Word, fighting sin, and making choices.  No matter our age, experiences, or knowledge we all need wisdom.  Even in the things we know best or better than others we all have an incredible amount of room to grow.   So how can we get wisdom?

Some immediately look to experience and this is a valid source.  But it is not the ultimate source.  A person can have all the experiences they want and never grow in wisdom.  In fact, experience can propagate foolishness.  Because of a negative experience a person can cultivate anger against God.  Because of a positive experience a person can cultivate pride.   Experience CAN be a venue for wisdom, but it is not the ultimate source.  It is a tool that the ultimate source can use.

Some look to people and this again is a valid source of wisdom that I recommend.  But it is not the ultimate source.  Why?  Because people are limited.  Time, space, matter and sin limit them.  People CAN be a venue for wisdom, but it is not the ultimate source.  It is a tool that the ultimate source can use.

The world’s current trend is to find wisdom from within one’s own heart.  To follow your heart.  This is dangerous.  Why?  Because our heart is deceptive and impulsive.  Can our heart be a source of wisdom? Yes.  But it is not the ultimate source.  It is a tool that the ultimate source can use.

So, what is the ultimate source of wisdom?  Proverbs 15:31 gives us a clue.  It says, “The ear that listens to life-giving reproof will dwell among the wise.”  Who is the source of life?  It is God and God alone.  How can we listen to His life-giving reproof?  We have several venues: prayer (conversation with God), Bible (a living recording of God’s wisdom), fellow believers (people who can speak for God when they are in submission to Him), creation (the power and wisdom of God on display), the plan of God (his past, present and future interventions in this world and our life).

Today, be encouraged.  You don’t just have a few faulty tools to grow in wisdom.  You have the ultimate source, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.  And as we look to him He can take those faulty tools and lead us to wisdom.
