Procrastinating

Elders15

Its 10:10 am Monday April 24th.  The due date for this elder insight.  I’ve had a couple of fleeting thoughts about what I might put down but not a prayerful thought.  So here it goes.  Hmm, nothing.  I’m not a true procrastinator but it does afflict me from time to time.   It’s now 10:50 and I’ve been typing and deleting for forty minutes.  Lord I’m waiting.  Thinking about procrastinating makes me think of King Agrippa.  The Wednesday evening prayer group recently looked at his encounter with the Apostle Paul in the book of Acts.  in Chapter 26:27 & 28; Paul says to the King Agrippa “Do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe” and the King reply’s “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”  King Agrippa procrastinated and was lost for eternity.  I wonder how many times I have missed an opportunity to make a difference by not responding to God.  I can think of specific occurrences that make me cringe.  How will I respond in the days ahead?  Wait, this makes me think about our starting to seek God’s vision for FBC.  Will I be ready to act?  Will you?  Wouldn’t it be nice if God spoke to us in an audible voice?  We could really get moving and get things done with great success.  I wonder again, would we work in concert with God or forge ahead in our own wisdom, strength and timing?  Yup, I suspect the latter.  I’ve come to believe God makes us work at discerning His will so our focus will be on Him and not on ourselves.  Consider Isaiah 55: 8 & 9.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.  For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Consequently, we must keep ourselves out of the way when seeking Gods will.  But focus alone does not get the job done and procrastination will never get the job done. When God reveals his will to us it is then and there that we must be ready and willing to respond and take action.  Again, keeping ourselves out of the way by trusting God for the means and the outcome.  Oh, and remember, we are in this together.  It takes individual believers to make a church, not a building.

Thank you Lord, Dean Peters
