Serve with your words!  So often when I think of serving God in a great way I think of going on a dangerous mission’s trip, preaching till I faint, or eradicating the financial burdens of others until I am financially burdened myself.  I think in very radical terms and there is nothing wrong with that.  We should seek to be radical followers of Jesus Christ willing and wanting to do anything.  But so often in looking for the gigantic, obvious ways to serve I forget the power of “common service.”  Service that we can do at any time.   We can stop and pray.  At any time, we can call upon the God of this universe to reign blessings on our brother or sister in Christ.  At any time, we can pull out God’s Word and arm ourselves for battle so that when the church is attacked we can fight for our brothers and sisters in Christ.  At any time, we can choose to serve with our words.  And here’s where I would like to camp out.  Think about this.  At any time, you or I could send an encouraging text message, email, or Facebook message to a brother or sister in Christ.  At any time, we could pick up the phone and encourage each other.  Or better yet, we God brings someone down our physical path we can encourage them.  And to all this you might be saying, “John, words are so empty.”  And to that I would say yes and no.  Yes, we can be fake.  We can flatter and be self-righteous with our words.  But that should never stop us from serving others with genuine words of encouragement.  Proverbs 10:11a says, “The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life!!”  This life is like a barren wasteland when it comes to joy.  But our words can be a fountain of life that turns that barren wasteland into a fertile garden bursting with beautiful joy.  Be encouraged!  As you seek to serve God in a radical way you don’t have to search very far.  You can have a radical influence for Christ with every word that you speak.
