Sin and Cleansing

Cleansing from Sin

The Disgustingness Of Sin

Two weeks ago, I got this text from my wife:

But when I got home, the house was cleaned with not a hint of throw up anywhere.  To top it off, upon completion of her cleaning, Kimberly didn’t say another word of complaint about how disgusting it was and all the work she no doubt had to do to clean it up.  She is an amazing mom.

That same day I had turned to 1 John 1:9 and I couldn’t help but see the correlation.  Like my son’s throw-up, we make a far more disgusting mess with our sin on a daily basis.  With sin like lust, “white-lies”, unwholesome speech, unforgiveness, pride, cowardice and a plethora of others, we throw up all over ourselves, God, our relationships, and creation.

The Solution To Sin

But, like Kimberly is an amazing Mom, Jesus is a far more amazing Savior.  Jesus, our Holy, perfect and pure God, cleansed us of our disgusting sin by putting those sins upon himself and enduring the punishment we deserve by being tortured, beaten and crushed by the full wrath of God the Father (all the hell we deserve.)

When the Lord brings us to the place where we truly recognize the seriousness of our sin and status before a Holy and just God, and with a broken and contrite heart repent of our sin and trust in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, ALL our unrighteousness becomes paid for and perfectly cleansed.  As 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

The prevalence of false repentance

The reality of this truth though is that our world is filled with people who claim to be Christians yet have never truly repented of their sin and been made right with God. If instead of being grieved by our sin, we constantly find ourselves making excuses and trying to justify it, then we have likely not been brought to the point of true repentance necessary for receiving cleansing.

Application

If you find yourself in this state today, I encourage you to pray and ask God to lift the veil from your eyes so that you can truly see, confess and repent of your sin and trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, be cleansed of all your unrighteousness and become a true child of God and recipient of eternal life.

If you are a true child of God yet have un-confessed and unrepentant sin in your life, I encourage you to pray to God, confess your sin and turn away from it. Experience Christ’s ongoing cleansing and sanctification and be free from the burden that is incumbering your service and keeping you from a close, intimate and joy-filled walk with the Lord.

Today, as you interact with both professing Christians and those who are openly opposed to Christ, remember and share this beautiful truth.  Jesus is the amazing Savior that no matter what we’ve done or how far we’ve fallen, upon our true confession and repentance of sin, CAN cleanse us from all our unrighteousness. What an amazing Savior. What a merciful God!
