What you hold in your hands is something powerful. The Bible is more than a good book, it’s more than a New York Times Bestseller, it’s more than a great motivational tool, it goes deeper into the human soul than the philosophy of Plato, it penetrates the human heart more powerfully than the writings of Shakespeare, and it speaks louder and more sternly than the constitution of the United States. The Hebrews writer puts it this way in chapter 4 verse 12 : “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
God’s Word is a weapon that we, far too often, refuse to utilize in the war against us. Remember Jesus says that there is an enemy, a thief, who “comes to steal, to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10) and Paul reminds us that “we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12). In order to fight a spiritual battle, we need a spiritual weapon, one that has been fashioned by the same God who saves us from this spiritual darkness. This weapon has everything we need to slay our enemy with a vengeance, and to proclaim victory over our foes. Yet, again, we leave it laying on the coffee table next to the Reader’s Digest and last weeks crossword puzzle.
In the same way, when we refuse to learn how to utilize this weapon, when we become complacent with our cardboard cut-out swords, we become susceptible to the enemy’s attacks. Then we find ourselves saying, “Woe is me! My life is a train wreck and I don’t know why!” It’s like trying to defend yourself from a bullet with a piece of construction paper. It’s not going to work! And when we suffer from the agony of a gunshot, we wonder why the construction paper didn’t stop the bullet…
Christian, it’s time to wake up! You cannot fend off the enemy of Christ, Satan and sinful flesh, with the tools of this world. God has given you His Word, not to sit in the center of your living room as a “symbol” of your faith, but as a weapon to be utilized in the fight for your life! You have a weapon that can defeat the enemy. It negates the weapons of Satan, and He can do nothing but throw them at your feet in defeat.
God’s Word is powerful! We must learn it, memorize it, read it, bathe in it, preach it, defend it, know it, pursue it, obey it, proclaim it, apply it, and encourage each other with it. It is our one and only sure defense against the weapons of this world. Stop what you’re doing right now, open up His Word, and let it give you peace and comfort in the midst of your trials.
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” – 2 Timothy 2:15
